FC Goa ended a 13-match winless streak against Mumbai City FC with a commanding 3-1 win at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The Gaurs’ victory, which saw them strengthen their grip on second place in the standings, was powered by a stellar performance from Iker Guarrotxena, who scored a brace, and Borja Herrera, who added a third to seal the win.
Guarrotxena opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a dazzling solo effort. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, the Spanish forward weaved past the entire Mumbai defense, moving laterally before finding a central position just outside the penalty area. He then rifled a precise shot into the bottom right corner to put FC Goa ahead.
Just before halftime, in the 41st minute, Guarrotxena doubled the visitors’ lead, with Udanta Singh providing the assist. The two combined effectively to leave Mumbai’s defense scrambling as Guarrotxena finished with aplomb.
In the second half, FC Goa extended their advantage in the 64th minute through Borja Herrera. He capitalized on a weak header clearance from Mumbai defender Mehtab Singh, timing his run to perfection to slot the ball into the bottom right corner, unmarked and calm under pressure.
Mumbai City FC pulled one back in the final moments of the match, as a foul by FC Goa goalkeeper Tiwari gave the Islanders a penalty. Lallianzuala Chhangte stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick in the 90th minute, sending the ball straight down the middle for a late consolation goal.
The win sees FC Goa move to 39 points from 20 matches, solidifying their position in second place with 11 wins and six draws. Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC were unable to build on their previous successes and will be looking to bounce back after the defeat.
