Iran Qualifies for 2026 World Cup After Dramatic Draw with Uzbekistan

Iran secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in Tehran on Tuesday. Striker Mehdi Taremi was the hero for the home side, netting both goals to ensure Iran’s fourth consecutive World Cup appearance and seventh overall.

The match at Azadi Stadium saw Uzbekistan take the lead twice, but Taremi’s clinical finishing kept Iran in contention. Khojimat Erkinov opened the scoring for Uzbekistan in the 16th minute, but Taremi equalized early in the second half with a stunning volley from the edge of the box.

Uzbekistan regained the lead almost immediately through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, but Taremi struck again in the 83rd minute, tapping in from close range to seal Iran’s qualification. With two games remaining in Group A, Iran remains unbeaten, while Uzbekistan sits two points behind in second place.

The 2026 World Cup, set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams. Iran will aim to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
