Bengaluru FC Makes History with Record 5-0 Play-Off Win Over Mumbai City

Bengaluru FC scripted a historic victory in the Indian Super League (ISL) play-offs, thrashing Mumbai City FC 5-0 in a one-sided encounter on Saturday. This marks the biggest-ever margin of victory in ISL play-off history, propelling Bengaluru into the semi-finals, where they will face Goa in a two-legged tie on April 2 and 6.

Dominant Start and Clinical Finishing
Bengaluru wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Suresh Singh Wangjam opening the scoring in the ninth minute. A failed clearance by Mumbai’s Thaer Krouma allowed Wangjam to capitalize on Ryan Williams’ cross, firing a powerful shot into the net. Mumbai had chances to equalize but failed to convert, and Bengaluru doubled their lead just before halftime. A penalty, earned after Rahul Bheke fouled Williams, was coolly converted by Edgar Mendes.

Second-Half Onslaught
The second half saw Bengaluru maintain their aggressive approach. Williams added a third in the 62nd minute, finishing a smooth assist from Wangjam. Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri then joined the party, scoring a stunning long-range effort after a quick counter-attack initiated by Jorge Pereyra Díaz.

Diaz, a former Mumbai City player, rubbed salt in the wounds by netting the fifth goal. A clever pass from another Mumbai ex-player, Alberto Noguera, set up Diaz inside the box, and his precise strike sealed Mumbai’s misery.

Historic Milestone
The emphatic win shattered ISL play-off records, with no team previously winning by such a massive margin. Bengaluru’s relentless attack and Mumbai’s defensive lapses made it a night to remember for the home fans.

Looking Ahead
Bengaluru will now shift focus to their semi-final clash against Goa, aiming to carry this momentum forward. For Mumbai City, the heavy defeat raises questions as their campaign ends in disappointment.

With this statement victory, Bengaluru FC has not only secured a semi-final berth but also sent a strong message to their rivals.
