In a thrilling encounter on Tuesday evening, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Taawoun secured their first-ever semi-final berth in the AFC Champions League 2, defeating Iran’s Tractor 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a gripping 2-2 draw in regular and extra time. The match, held in the second leg of the quarter-finals, showcased resilience, drama, and a historic achievement for the Saudi club.

Tractor took the lead in the 50th minute through a penalty converted by Ricardo Alves, but Al-Taawoun responded swiftly with a stunning strike from Gambian forward Musa Barrow in the 54th minute. The Saudi side then surged ahead in the 92nd minute, as Sultan Mandash scored a brilliant goal during the first half of extra time, sending the home crowd into raptures.

However, a defensive lapse cost Al-Taawoun in the 105th minute, as Croatian defender Domagoj Drozdek headed in the equalizer for Tractor, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. Al-Taawoun held their nerve, converting all four of their penalties through Ashraf Al-Mahdhawi, Musa Barrow, André Gueratto, and Abdul Fattah Adam. Tractor, on the other hand, managed only two successful spot-kicks, sealing Al-Taawoun’s historic victory.

The first leg of the tie had ended in a goalless draw in Tabriz, setting the stage for a tense second leg. Al-Taawoun’s triumph marks a significant milestone for the club, as they continue their remarkable journey in the competition.

In the semi-finals, Al-Taawoun will face the winner of the clash between UAE’s Shabab Al-Ahli and Sharjah. The first leg of that tie ended in a 1-1 draw in Dubai, with the second leg set to determine Al-Taawoun’s next opponent.

The Saudi club’s achievement has sparked celebrations among their fans, who are now dreaming of continental glory. As Al-Taawoun prepares for the semi-finals, their remarkable run in the AFC Champions League 2 has already etched their name in the history books.
