Cafu, the legendary Brazilian right-back, has shared his thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent claim of being the “most complete player of all time.” While Cafu respects Ronaldo’s achievements, he disagrees with the Portuguese star’s assertion that he is the greatest footballer in history.
Despite turning 40, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to impress with his goal-scoring abilities, currently playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. With over 900 career goals and numerous individual and team accolades, Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in football history. However, his recent statement during an interview sparked widespread debate. Ronaldo claimed, “I think I’m the most complete football player that has ever existed. People might prefer Messi, Maradona, or Pelé, and I respect that, but I believe I am the best player in football history. I haven’t seen anyone better than me, and I say this from my heart.”
Cafu said, “Cristiano is a phenomenal player, but not the best of all time. When we talk about the greatest in history, we must mention names like Maradona, Pelé, Platini, Franz Beckenbauer, and Garrincha. These were incredible players.” He added, “Cristiano Ronaldo was the best for six or seven years, but in a discussion about the best in history, we have to consider players who performed at a higher level than him.”
This isn’t the first time Ronaldo has declared himself the greatest. In a 2015 interview, he stated, “I don’t need to say ‘I’m a legend’ or ‘I’m in the history of football.’ The numbers speak for themselves. To improve further is very tough. I just want to maintain my level because that’s the hardest part for a footballer.” He also emphasized, “In my mind, I’m always the best. I don’t care what people think or say. In my mind, not just this year but always, I’m the best.”
When asked about comparisons with Lionel Messi, who was at Barcelona at the time, Ronaldo said, “It’s all about opinions. I respect them. Maybe you think Messi is better than me, but in my mind, I am better than him. It’s as simple as that.”
