MLS Bans Lionel Messi’s Personal Bodyguard from Pitchside Duties Amid Security Concerns

Yassine Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, claims pitch invasions have increased in the U.S. compared to Europe, urges collaboration with league officials

Major League Soccer (MLS) and CONCACAF have barred Yassine Cheuko, Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, from standing pitchside during matches, sparking a debate over player security. Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL hired after Messi’s move to Inter Miami, reportedly on David Beckham’s recommendation, has been a constant presence at the Argentine star’s games. However, the league has now taken over matchday security for its marquee player, sidelining Cheuko in the process.

In an interview with House of Highlights, Cheuko expressed his frustration, revealing that pitch invasions have been far more frequent in the U.S. than in Europe, where he previously worked. “In seven years with Ligue 1 and the Champions League, only six pitch invaders occurred. But in 20 months here, there have already been 16,” he said. “There’s a clear security issue, and I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”

While Cheuko respects MLS’s authority, he believes a collaborative approach would enhance safety. “I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we should work together. I’m not claiming to be better, but my European experience could help,” he added.

The decision also affects Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup matches, with the league seeking full control over Messi’s protection. As Messi continues to draw record crowds, the debate over balancing star security with league regulations remains unresolved.
