Bangladesh’s national football team has received a significant boost ahead of their AFC Asian Cup qualifier against India, with the arrival of former Premier League midfielder Hamza Choudhury. The 26-year-old, who currently plays for Championship side Sheffield United on loan from Leicester City, landed in Sylhet on Monday to join the Bangladesh camp. Choudhury, who recently switched his national allegiance from England to Bangladesh, is expected to strengthen the team’s midfield for the high-stakes match scheduled for March 25 in Shillong.
Choudhury, whose mother is from Bangladesh, represented England at the U-21 and U-23 levels before making the switch in December 2023. His inclusion is seen as a game-changer for Bangladesh, currently ranked 185th in FIFA standings, as they face India, ranked 126th. Despite the gap in rankings, Bangladesh is optimistic about their chances, with Choudhury drawing parallels between the upcoming clash and the intensity of a local derby, referencing his recent experience in Sheffield United’s 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby.
India, on the other hand, has struggled recently, failing to secure a win in 15 months. Their last victory came against Kuwait in November 2023. To bolster their squad, head coach Manolo Marquez has recalled retired striker Sunil Chhetri, 40, who remains a key figure for the team. However, India faces challenges in integrating overseas talent like Choudhury due to government regulations. Players of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) must relinquish their foreign citizenship to represent India, a rule that has previously deterred players like former Newcastle United striker Michael Chopra.
The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with Choudhury’s presence adding a new dimension to Bangladesh’s gameplay. Fans are eagerly anticipating the clash, hoping for a historic result as Bangladesh aims to progress in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
