Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has been appointed as the new head coach of the Spanish giants, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti. The 43-year-old, who enjoyed a successful playing career with 236 appearances for Real Madrid, has signed a contract until June 2028.
Alonso’s appointment follows Ancelotti’s departure after his final match in charge on Saturday. The Italian will now take the reins as Brazil’s national team coach. Alonso, a 2014 Champions League winner with Real Madrid as a player, will be officially unveiled at the club’s training ground on Monday.
His first assignment will be the Club World Cup, where Real Madrid will face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on June 18. Ancelotti, who previously praised Alonso as “one of the best in the world,” leaves behind a strong legacy, making way for the former Spain international to step in.
Alonso arrives with an impressive managerial record, having led Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season, an unbeaten campaign, along with a German Cup triumph. However, Leverkusen fell short this season, finishing as runners-up to Bayern Munich.
Now, Alonso faces the challenge of maintaining Real Madrid’s dominance in both domestic and European competitions. Fans will be eager to see if his tactical acumen and deep connection with the club can bring continued success to the Bernabéu.
