In a dramatic reversal, French football giants Olympique Lyonnais (OL) have secured their place in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season after successfully appealing a controversial administrative relegation. The National Financial Control Authority’s (DNCG) appeals committee overturned its own body’s earlier decision to demote Lyon to Ligue 2 due to financial breaches.
The club reacted with immediate relief, publishing an official statement: “Olympique Lyonnais welcomes the DNCG’s decision to keep the club in Ligue 1 and thanks the appeals committee for recognizing the ambitions of the new management, determined to implement strict and responsible financial management going forward.”
While avoiding the drop, Lyon faces significant financial restrictions. The appeals committee imposed strict controls on the club’s wage bill and transfer spending, tied directly to the budget presented by Lyon’s new ownership. These measures aim to ensure financial stability while allowing the club to remain competitive in France’s top flight and participate in the transfer market.
The decision marks a major victory for new owner Michele Kang (66), the American businesswoman who recently took control of the men’s team after successful leadership of Lyon’s dominant women’s side. Kang’s administration, backed by shareholders and financiers, framed the ruling as foundational to rebuilding trust: “This decision represents the first step in restoring confidence towards Olympique Lyonnais,” the statement read. “We will now focus all our efforts on preparing for the next season and achieving our sporting objectives.”
The club expressed “deep gratitude” to supporters, staff, players, partners, and local officials for their backing during the appeal process. Lyon fans now pin their hopes on Kang’s leadership to restore the club’s former glory – including reviving its famed youth academy, a cornerstone during Jean-Michel Aulas’ presidency that produced stars like Karim Benzema.
The reprieve allows Lyon, burdened by reported debts near €508 million and historically carrying Ligue 1’s second-highest wage bill, to focus on sporting ambitions rather than an immediate fight for promotion. Kang’s administration now faces the dual challenge of meeting financial targets while rebuilding a squad capable of returning Lyon to the upper echelons of French football. “Our entire focus,” the club stated, “is now on preparing for the next season.”
