Qatar Head to Historic World Cup Qualification on Merit

Doha, Qatar – Qatar secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over regional rivals UAE on Tuesday night, with second-half headers from Boualem Khoukhi and Pedro Miguel sending the reigning Asian champions directly to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The win in the crucial Asian Qualifiers fourth-round match booked Qatar’s ticket to the tournament in North America, marking the first time they have qualified for the global showpiece on sporting merit, having hosted the 2022 edition.

In a tense, must-win affair at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, the score remained goalless at the break. However, it took only four minutes into the second half for Qatar to break the deadlock. Star attacker Akram Afif delivered a precise free-kick, finding captain Boualem Khoukhi, who headed powerfully past the UAE goalkeeper.

The home side doubled their lead in the 74th minute, with Afif once again providing the delivery from a set-piece, which was converted by Pedro Miguel at the far post.

The match had a frantic finish after Qatar’s Tarek Salman was shown a straight red card in the 87th minute. The UAE, who only needed a draw to qualify, pulled a goal back deep into the 15 minutes of stoppage time through Sultan Adil, setting up a nervous final few moments.

Despite the late pressure, Qatar’s ten men held firm to secure the 2-1 result, topping their group and sparking wild celebrations. The UAE, as group runners-up, will now head to the next round of play-offs to continue their own World Cup dream.
