Real Madrid Stumble in La Liga Race as Atletico Seize Top Spot

Real Madrid’s La Liga title defense suffered a blow with a 2-1 loss to Real Betis on Saturday, allowing Atletico Madrid to claim the league lead. Atletico edged past Athletic Bilbao 1-0, moving two points clear of rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Former Real Madrid star Isco scored the winning penalty for Betis, while Brahim Diaz had initially put Madrid ahead. Betis equalized through Johnny Cardoso before Isco sealed the victory.

Atletico, meanwhile, secured a narrow win thanks to a goal from substitute Julian Alvarez, assisted by Marcos Llorente. Athletic Bilbao hit the woodwork three times but failed to equalize.

Barcelona can reclaim the top spot with a win against Real Sociedad on Sunday. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted his team must improve ahead of their Champions League clash with Atletico, as their league form has dipped with just one win in five matches.

The title race remains tight, with Atletico capitalizing on Madrid’s slip-up to take a temporary lead.
