Al Ahly rallied from a goal down to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory against their arch-rivals, Zamalek, on Monday in a heated match for the ninth round of the Egyptian Premier League.
The win reignited the title race, boosting Al Ahly’s tally to 15 points from eight matches, placing them third. Despite the loss, Zamalek remains at the top of the table with 17 points from nine matches. The match started with high drama. Zamalek was awarded a penalty, initially taken by Abdallah El Said. Although Al Ahly’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy saved it, the kick was retaken due to Al Ahly players entering the box too early. Hossam Abdelmaguid successfully converted the retaken penalty in the 32nd minute, giving Zamalek the lead.
Al Ahly’s momentum shifted in the second half with the introduction of substitute Hussein El Shahat, who netted the equalizer in the 71st minute. Just seven minutes later, El Shahat won a penalty for his side, which Mahmoud Trezeguet slotted home successfully in the 78th minute to complete the comeback.
Looking ahead, Al Ahly will face Kahraba El Ismailiya in their next fixture, while Zamalek will play against Ghazl El Mahalla.
