Arsenal Agree Club-Record €73.5m Deal for Sporting’s Goal Machine Gyökeres

Arsenal Football Club is on the verge of securing a sensational transfer coup, agreeing a deal with Sporting Lisbon to sign prolific Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres for a potential club-record fee, according to renowned journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Ornstein reports that the two clubs have reached an agreement in principle for Gyökeres’ transfer. The base fee is set at €63.5 million (£54.2m approx.), with potential add-ons rising to a further €10 million, bringing the total potential package to €73.5 million (£62.7m approx.). This sum would eclipse Arsenal’s previous transfer record.

Key Deal Points:

Fee Agreed: €63.5m upfront + €10m in achievable add-ons.
Contract: Gyökeres is set to sign a long-term 5-year contract with the Gunners.
Status: Final details of the agreement are currently being ironed out, with the deal described as imminent.

The 26-year-old striker arrives off the back of a truly remarkable season with Sporting Lisbon. In the 2024/25 campaign, Gyökeres was simply unstoppable:
52 Appearances
54 Goals
13 Assists

This phenomenal output, averaging over a goal per game, made him one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards.

Gyökeres’ contract with Sporting was due to run until summer 2028. He has prior experience in English football, having played for Brighton & Hove Albion, Swansea City, and Coventry City.

However, the move comes amidst reported tension between the player and Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas. Portuguese media claimed Gyökeres informed Varandas he would not return to the club for pre-season training. The root of the conflict appears to be a disagreement over a release clause. Reports suggest Gyökeres believed a fee of €60 million should trigger his departure, a claim seemingly contradicted by Varandas’ recent public statement: “The player won’t leave for €60 million.” Despite this, the clubs have now agreed a fee exceeding that figure.
