Dutch Defender Chooses La Liga as Atletico Secures Feyenoord Star in Record-Breaking Transfer.
In a dramatic transfer twist, Atlético de Madrid has officially announced the signing of Slovakian international defender David Hancko from Dutch champions Feyenoord Rotterdam.
The La Liga giants confirmed the deal in an official statement, revealing they have reached an agreement with Feyenoord for the 26-year-old centre-back. The transfer is now pending only the completion of a mandatory medical examination.
Hancko’s move to Madrid comes just days after a seemingly completed transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr spectacularly collapsed. Reports from Middle Eastern media, including the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper, indicated that Al-Nassr and Feyenoord had agreed on terms for the player. However, Atlético Madrid swiftly intervened to “hijack” the deal and secure Hancko’s signature.
The transfer fee is reported to be a significant €40 million, comprising a guaranteed €35 million plus €5 million in potential add-ons. This represents a record-breaking sale for Feyenoord.
Hancko’s path to Madrid included a notable stint in Italy with Fiorentina before moving on loan to Czech side Sparta Prague. He joined Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 and quickly became a pivotal figure in their defence, playing a key role in their Eredivisie title triumph in the 2022/23 season and KNVB Cup win in 2024. His strong performances at the heart of the Dutch club’s backline attracted significant interest this summer.
Atlético Madrid will be hoping Hancko’s arrival bolsters their defensive options as they aim to challenge domestically and in the UEFA Champions League. His ability to play as a left-sided centre-back in Diego Simeone’s preferred system is seen as a major asset.
Hancko is expected to undergo his medical in Madrid shortly before being unveiled as the latest addition to Simeone’s squad.
