Indian Clubs Suffer Opening Defeats in AFC Champions League Two

Indian football clubs Mohun Bagan Super Giant and FC Goa both suffered disappointing defeats in their opening matches of the AFC Champions League Two 2025-26 season this week.

In Kolkata on Tuesday, Mohun Bagan fell 1-0 to Turkmenistan’s Ahal FK in a dramatic upset at a stunned Salt Lake Stadium. The Indian Super League champions, who had bolstered their squad with new signings, dominated proceedings but failed to convert their chances. The visitors capitalized with an 83rd-minute winner, sparking furious reactions from home fans who directed chants of “Go Back Molina” at coach Juan Ferrando as players left the pitch.

A day later in Goa, FC Goa suffered a 2-0 defeat to Iraq’s Al Zawraa SC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Iraqi side struck just before halftime through Reziq Bani Hani and sealed victory with a late goal from Nizar Al Rashdan in added time. Despite creating several opportunities, particularly in the second half, the Gaurs were let down by poor finishing with Spanish forward Javier Siverio missing multiple chances.

The disappointing results mark a challenging start to the continental campaign for both Indian representatives, who will need to regroup quickly for their subsequent group stage matches.
